Make Metal Wrench Chimes

This project sounds weird, but the tone of these chimes is quite nice. Use box-end wrenches for a pleasant-sounding ring.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Scrounge up 10 old wrenches. Check flea markets, secondhand stores and pawnshops.

  2. Step 2

Collect a wooden hanger, some dental tape, scissors and an electric drill.

  3. Step 3

Drill ten 1/8-inch holes through a wooden coat hanger 1 1/2 inches apart.

  4. Step 4

Cut ten 15-inch pieces of dental tape. (Dental tape tends to be less tangly than regular string and is waterproof).

  5. Step 5

Tie each wrench securely with a piece of dental tape.

  6. Step 6

Run the other end of the tape through a hole in the hanger. Work from the largest wrenches at the ends to the smallest in the center.

  7. Step 7

Make sure the bottoms of all the wrenches are at the same level and then knot the tape at the holes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try a series of nails instead of wrenches.
  • If the wood splits while drilling, simply tie the strings around the hanger instead.
