How to Transfer and Import Data to Your Return in TurboTax

You can avoid tedious entry of data (such as names, addresses and specific tax-related information) in TurboTax (tax year 1999) by importing data from a previous year's tax return, or from Quicken or QuickBooks.

Things You'll Need:

    Transferring Data From TurboTax or MacInTax

  1. Step 1

    Locate your last tax return file. If it's on a removable disk, insert the disk into the appropriate drive.

  2. Step 2

    Open TurboTax.

  3. Step 3

    Click Start My Return.

  4. Step 4

    Click Continue.

  5. Step 5

    Click Transfer From Last Year.

  6. Step 6

    Find and choose the file or enter the path.

  7. Step 7

    Click Transfer Selected Return.

  8. Step 8

    Review the information that transferred.

  9. Importing From Quicken, QuickBooks or Another Program

  10. Step 1

    Follow the instructions in your financial program to create a TXF file.

  11. Step 2

    In TurboTax, click "1. Personal Info" in the gray menu below the top menu bar.

  12. Step 3

    Click Import in the pop-up menu.

  13. Step 4

    Click on the name of your financial program or click Other Financial Software.

  14. Step 5

    Click Import Now.

  15. Step 6

    Find and choose the file or enter the path containing the TXF file.

  16. Step 7

    Click Open.

Tips & Warnings
  • The way you create TXF files varies in different versions of Quicken.
