How to Create a Template for a Web Page With Dreamweaver

Templates are especially useful when you want the same basic elements - such as logos, navigation bars and copyright information - on each page in your Web site. You can also use templates to specify background colors, font sizes, and other common settings, saving you a lot of work designing each individual page. Dreamweaver 3.0 makes templates easy.

Instructions

  1. Creating a New Template

    • 1

Start Dreamweaver and open a blank page.

    • 2

Open the Windows menu and select Templates.

    • 3

Click on the New Template button in the lower right corner, which resembles a piece of paper with the corner folded over. Type the name you want for the template.

    • 4

Insert the content you wish to appear on each page, including links, images, background colors and font styles.

    • 5

When finished, click on the File menu and choose Save As Template. Type the name of the template.

Saving an Existing Page as a Template

    • 6

Start Dreamweaver and open the page to be used as a template.

    • 7

Make any desired changes to the Web page, such as deleting page-specific content or adding information that will appear on each page.

    • 8

From the File menu, choose Save As Template. Locate the site the template will be saved in and name the template.

    Editing an Existing Template

    • 9

With the Dreamweaver program open, click on Window and select Templates.

    • 10

Double-click the template name to open it.

    • 11

Make any changes desired and save the file. The changes will be applied only to new pages created using the template, not pages already created with a template.

Isn't there a way to reload default templates into Dreamweaver. And just to be clear, what do you mean by template. I am talking about templates where the colors and styles are picked out--e.g., I have a LOT of work to get done, and don't have time design.
