How to Understand the Rules of Roller Hockey

Although roller hockey appears to be the same as ice hockey (only without the ice), several essential elements make it a very different sport.

From Quick Guide: Roller Hockey
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Play roller hockey on a flat surface that's clear of debris and obstacles (see "How to Set Up a Roller Hockey Rink," under Related eHows, for a more comprehensive court description). Play either indoors or outdoors.

  2. Step 2

Realize that roller hockey does not allow checking or body blocking. Only accidental or incidental contact is permitted.

  3. Step 3

Understand that there is no offsides or icing in roller hockey. Players can be anywhere they want on the court, and shots can be taken from anywhere. As long as the puck is in play, the game continues.

  4. Step 4

Realize that kicking the puck is legal, but a goal may not be scored in this manner.

  5. Step 5

Play roller hockey with five players (including the goalie) on each team, as opposed to six per team in ice hockey. This allows for a more open playing field.

  6. Step 6

Limit games to two 15-minute stop time halves, or two 22-minute running time halves.

  7. Step 7

Start each half with a faceoff and play until one team scores or the puck leaves play. Face off again after each goal.

  • Full pads must be worn by all players on the rink at all times.
  • Roller hockey is a physically demanding sport that could result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
