If you decide to move your Web page to a different server, keep your old account open for a while. Using FrontPage, you can send users to your new site when they try to access your old URL. These instructions work for all versions of FrontPage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start the FrontPage program and open the appropriate web.

  2. Step 2

Open the main Web page for your site. This page is usually titled index.htm or default.htm.

  3. Step 3

Select Page Properties from the File menu.

  4. Step 4

Click on the Custom tab and add a System Variable by clicking on the Add tab.

  5. Step 5

Name the variable "Refresh" (without quotation marks).

  6. Step 6

Type the following value, without the quotation marks: "3; URL=http://www.ehow.com/nwpg.html". Change the number 3 to the number of seconds between the time the old page is loaded and when the browser is directed to a new page, and change the URL to the new address for your site's home page.

  7. Step 7

    Click OK.

  8. Step 8

Save the page as a new file, so that you don't accidentally upload it to your new Web server.

  9. Step 9

Upload the page to your old Web server.

Tips & Warnings
  • Not all browsers will automatically refresh; you may want to offer a small text link that says "Click here if your browser does not take you to the new site," and then provide a manual link.
  • Be sure to register your new site with search engines.
  • Keep your old account open for a minimum of two months in order for users to find you. Publicize the move on your Web site and through mailings or e-zines.
