Think about the person you're sending the valentine to and the kind of message you want to send.

      • 2

Browse through magazines and catalogs looking for pictures and words that convey your feelings.

      • 3

Cut out the pictures and words you find.

      • 4

Be creative in your cutting. Use scissors with decorative edges, called paper edgers, or cut pieces into heart shapes.

      • 5

Arrange the cutouts on a blank greeting card or a piece of card stock that has been cut to the desired size and folded in half.

      • 6

Try placing your cutouts in different ways. Overlap pieces or combine pictures and words in unique combinations.

      • 7

Glue the pictures and words to the card with a glue stick or rubber cement once you have them arranged in a design you like.

      • 8

Add glitter or valentine stickers to your design.

      • 9

Use words cut out of a magazine to write a valentine greeting or poem on the inside of the card.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Cut out more pictures and words than you think you'll need. This will give you more flexibility in creating your design.

    • Choose pictures from children's magazines for a child's valentine. Lingerie catalogs and women's magazines are good sources of pictures for romantic cards. "Victoria" and "Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion" magazines are full of beautiful pictures for traditional valentines.

    • Rubber cement or a glue stick will work better than white glue for this project. White glue will cause magazine cutouts to warp and wrinkle.

    • If using rubber cement, make sure you work in a well-ventilated area.
