Trains are the ideal mode of travel in many parts of the world. More
comfortable, affordable and convenient than planes for some journeys,
train travel is worth exploring. Beautiful scenery, sparkling conversation
and the elegant dining car all add to the romance and pleasure.

From Quick Guide: Riding the Railway
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look into a world of trains. RailEurope.com offers a variety of European destinations and connections. Check country Web sites for more options: Russia (waytorussia.net), China (chinatrain- ticket.com), Australia (australianexplorer.com) and Southeast Asia (seat61.com). Take a spectacular journey through South Africa on The Pride of Africa (rovos.co.za)--dubbed the most luxurious train in the world. Or steep yourself in history with a trip on the legendary Orient-Express (orient-express.com).

  2. Step 2

Buy a train pass if you'd like to roam one country or many for a few days or longer. Europe's famous Eurail pass (eurail.com), for example, provides access to 17 countries on a 100,000-mile (161,000 km) network of tracks. With the cost-effective Eurail Selectpass, you can travel to any three bordering countries.

  3. Step 3

Mix train travel with driving. The Eurail Selectpass Drive includes travel by train and car throughout five countries. Rail 'n' Drive passes are for specific areas, such as France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Scandinavia and Spain, and include VAT (value-added tax) and unlimited mileage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Reserve sleeping cars in advance for an extra charge, unless you don't mind sleeping in your seat. If you're traveling overnight and want to meet the morning refreshed, it's worth the investment. Some cars even come with a private bath.
  • Eurail passes do not include a sleeper car or high-speed rail (TGV). Additional reservations and payments are required in most cases.
