A charity walk or run raises money for a good cause by capitalizing on people's desire to help as well as get in shape. And there are any number of good causes that need cash infusions--from cystic fibrosis, AIDS or breast cancer research to school districts that face music and sports cutbacks without additional revenues. Whatever the cause, read 381 Plan a Fund-Raising Event, then get on your mark, get set and go!

on 3/20/2006 Many runners at any charity run are there more for the run than the charity, while others are committed more to the cause than the running. To really make money for your cause, you need to attract both. To attract runners you should make sure you have an accurately measured course. The 5k (3.1 mile) and 10k (6.2) are the most popular distance. Make sure your race is listed in online calendars like active.com or runners world. Do not rely on a stop watch at the finish line. Rent or borrow timing equipment from a local school or running group. Whether you are going to award T-shirts to all registrants, finishers only, or the first few hundred to register, make sure you have enough sponsors to cover most of the shirt costs so the bulk of participant fees can go to the charity. People who are dedicated to the cause but may not feel comfortable running can be drawn into the fun by billing your event as a run/walk, having drawings for random prizes instead of awards to top finishers, and providing entertainment or food at the finish line.
