How to Copy Internet Settings to Another Computer (Windows to Windows)

If you want to access your ISP somewhere else, what do you do? Unfortunately, in Windows, you have to manually transfer Internet settings from one computer to the other.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Starting with the computer you want to copy settings from, open the Start menu, choose Settings and then choose Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click on the Internet Options icon.

  3. Step 3

    Select the Connections tab.

  4. Step 4

    Click the Settings button next to the Dial-up menu.

  5. Step 5

    Click the Properties button in the new Settings window.

  6. Step 6

    Select the Server Types tab. Note the type of server listed in the Type of Dial-Up Server menu.

  7. Step 7

    Click the TCP/IP Settings button toward the bottom of the Server Types pane.

  8. Step 8

    Write down the IP address and any server addresses that appear in the TCP/IP settings window. (Note that many ISPs use server-assigned IP and server addresses. In this case, the only thing to copy down will be to click the Server-Assigned radio button.)

  9. Step 9

    Click OK in each window to close them.

  10. Step 10

    In the target computer, access the Connections section of the Internet Options control panel as described above.

  11. Step 11

    Create a new Connection file by clicking the Add button next to the Dial-up menu. Follow the instructions for setting up the new file. This will involve entering your login name, password and other information provided by your ISP.

  12. Step 12

    Once the Connection file has been established, click on the connection you just made in the Dial-up menu and click the Settings button.

  13. Step 13

    Access the TCP/IP Settings section as described above.

  14. Step 14

    Input the information that you wrote down from your old computer, including the IP address and any server addresses.

  15. Step 15

    Click OK in each window to close them.
