Name a cell to refer to it by name (perhaps "Taxes" or "Widget Sales"), not by cell reference (such as C3 or F8). Naming cells can make it easier to set up formulas. You can also name a cell range. These steps work with Microsoft Excel 97.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Enter Microsoft Excel and open the file you want to change.

  2. Step 2

Select the cell or range of cells that you want to name.

  3. Step 3

Click the name box at the left side of the formula bar (it probably has something like "A1" or "B6" in it right now).

  4. Step 4

Type the name for the cells.

  5. Step 5

Press Enter to process your changes.

Tips & Warnings
  • The formula bar is above the cell columns.
