Use background images to add color and interest to your Web page. These instructions use FrontPage 98, a simple Web design program from Microsoft.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Start the FrontPage program and open an existing web. (See "How to Begin a Web Site with Front Page.")

  2. Step 2

Choose Show FrontPage Editor from the Tools menu, or click on the FrontPage Editor icon on the toolbar.

  3. Step 3

    Open the page you want.

  4. Step 4

Click on the File menu and choose Page Properties. Click on the Background tab.

  5. Step 5

Check the Background Image box and click on the Browse button to choose a background image.

  6. Step 6

Use images located in the current web by choosing Current FrontPage Web and clicking on the Images folder. Click on the Other Locations tab to choose other images on the hard disk (not Microsoft clip art). Choose the Clipart tab to use pre-loaded clip art. Select a category from the pull-down menu. Click on the image you want to use and click OK.

  7. Step 7

In the Background box, check Watermark to keep the image stationary (not scrolling).

  8. Step 8

Make any other changes, such as background color or link colors. Click OK.

  9. Step 9

    Save the page when finished.

  10. Step 10

Preview the page in a Web browser by choosing Preview in Browser from the File menu. From the dialog box, choose which browser to use and what settings.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's best to import images into the web before using them on a page; that way, you're guaranteed that the image will automatically be uploaded to the Web when you publish the site. See "How to Import a File into FrontPage" for instructions.
  • Images will tile repeatedly across the page, so make sure you are using a small, simple graphic.
  • Using light grey or lightly-colored images will make it easier to read text on Web page.
  • Look for free background images on the Web by typing "free background" into a search engine, such as Yahoo! or Google.
  • Borders that span the left side of a Web page are really tiled images. The border is a small rectangle of color and the rest of the image is clear, repeating down the page so it looks like a border.
  • Obtain permission before using any unlicensed or copyrighted clip art. Do not use images from another Web page without permission from the owner of the site.
  • Most pre-loaded clip art that comes with FrontPage is suitable for use on your Web site; if you are unsure, contact Microsoft before using the art.
