Observing the Jewish Sabbath means reorienting yourself to setting aside a day for rest. Traditional observance includes attending synagogue on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, having a special Friday night meal, and indulging in rest and relaxation.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shabbat Candles
  • Challahs
  • Kiddush Wines
  1. Step 1

Discuss the matter with your family and decide exactly what you wish to do on Shabbat. Will you go to synagogue for Shabbat services? Will everyone be home for dinner Friday night and relax with the family on Saturday?

  2. Step 2

Make sure your children know how much cooperation you want from them in observing Shabbat. Older children may resent the change in lifestyle, especially if it conflicts with other Friday evening and Saturday afternoon plans.

  3. Step 3

Observe friends or relatives to see how they celebrate Shabbat. Have dinner together on Friday night or go to synagogue together.

  4. Step 4

Check out the Shabbat services at different temples and see which you like the best.

  5. Step 5

Attend a weekend Shabbat retreat with friends or family if you can find a synagogue that offers one. This will help you learn how to observe Shabbat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Orthodox, Conservative and Reform customs vary, and even within each tradition, every family maintains its own way of observing Shabbat.
  • Don't worry if it takes a little while to get the kinks worked out, and to determine the particular way in which you and your family wish to observe the Sabbath.
