How to Reset the Password on a Virtual Machine

Save

If you're managing a virtual machine on an enterprise application, like VMware vCloud Director, you have quite a bit of control over the operation of the VM. Consumer products, on the other hand, don't offer you the same level of command. For example, if you forget the password to log in to your guest operating system on VMware Player, Oracle VirtualBox or Hyper V Client, there are no changes you can make to your VM to resolve the issue. Instead, you have to treat the VM just like a physical computer and crack the password using third-party software.

VMware Player

  • Download PCUnlocker, OphCrack Live CD or Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (links in Resources) to your computer.

  • Right-click your virtual machine in VMware Player and then choose "Virtual Machine Settings" from the context menu.

  • Click the "CD/DVD (IDE)" category and then select the "Use ISO Image File" radio button under Connection.

  • Click the "Browse" button; then navigate to and select the download file. Click "OK."

  • Launch your virtual machine, click inside the window when the VMware logo appears and then press "Esc" to open the boot menu.

  • Use the cursor keys to select "CD-ROM Drive" from the options and then press "Enter" to boot to the ISO file.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password.

Oracle VirtualBox

  • Download PCUnlocker, OphCrack Live CD or Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (links in Resources) to your computer.

  • Right-click your virtual machine in VirtualBox and then choose "Settings" from the context menu.

  • Click the "Storage" tab and then choose "CD/DVD Drive" from the Storage Tree in the right pane.

  • Click "Choose a Virtual CD/DVD Disk File" (the disc icon); then navigate to and select the download file. Click "OK."

  • Double-click your virtual machine and then press "F12" on the loading screen to view the boot options.

  • Use the cursor keys to select "CD-ROM" and then press "Enter" to boot to the ISO. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password.

Hyper V Client

  • Download PCUnlocker, OphCrack Live CD or Offline NT Password & Registry Editor (links in Resources) to your computer.

  • Right-click your virtual machine in Hyper V Client and then choose "Settings" from the context menu.

  • Expand "IDE Controller 1" in the left pane and then click "DVD Drive."

  • Click "Image File" under Media and then click "Browse." Navigate to and select the download file.

  • Select "BIOS" from the left pane, move "CD" to the top of Startup Order and then click "OK."

  • Right-click your VM and then choose "Start" from the context menu to boot to the ISO file.

  • Follow the on-screen prompts to reset your password. When the process ends, return to the DVD Drive screen, set Media to "None" and then click "OK."
