How to Change the Order of the Fields in an Apple Address Book

Although you can add several fields of information about your contacts in Apple's Address Book application -- including URLs, birthdays and online profiles -- you may not like the order in which the fields appear. For example, you may want to place a contact's mobile number under his or her email address, or vice versa. Fortunately, you can edit Address Book's preferences to organize how these fields appear for all new contacts.

  • Open Address Book. Click the "Address Book" menu option at the top of the Address Book window, and then select "Preferences."

  • Click the "Template" button at the top of the Preferences window.

  • Click the "-" buttons listed next to their corresponding fields in the Template window to remove all fields from the Template window.

  • Click the "Add Field" drop-down button, and select the field you would like to appear first in your Template's order.

  • Choose new fields in the order you would like them to appear in your Template.

  • Click the "+" button next to a field to add another entry for a specific field if needed.

  • Exit the Preferences window to save your changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Template preference changes apply only to new contacts. Old contacts must be deleted and re-added for their fields to appear in the correct order.
  • Information in this article applies to Address Book 6 and higher. It may vary slightly or significantly with other versions or products.
