Cydia enables you to customize your jailbroken iPhone with apps and themes not available in the iTunes App Store. However, Cydia does not change the basic functionality of the iPhone. Therefore, if the grey virtual keyboard on the iPhone is not to your liking, you can download a third-party app that enables you to change the color of the keyboard. Color keyboard apps are relatively inexpensive, and you can purchase them from either the Cydia store or the iTunes App Store.
Press the "Home" button, and then tap "Cydia." Log in to Cydia using your Facebook or Google+ account.
Tap the "Search" icon, type "Color Keyboard" into the box and then tap "Search." Tap the "Color Keyboard by Yoo Seung Kim" link in the search results list.
Tap "Purchase Product" button, and then follow the on-screen instructions to pay for the Color Keyboard app with the Amazon or PayPal account linked with your Cydia store account. As of September 2013, the cost of the Color Keyboard app in the Cydia store is $1.99.
Tap the "Install" button when it displays after you purchase Color Keyboard in the Cydia store. Wait a few seconds for Cydia to download and install the Color Keyboard app automatically.
Press the "Home" button and tap "Settings." Scroll down to and tap "Color Keyboard." Slide the "Enable" switch to the "ON" position, and then tap "Select Themes."
Select a color theme to use for your iPhone pop-up keyboard, and then tap the "Color Keyboard" button at the top of the screen.
Tap the "Save" button at the top of the screen, and then tap "Respring" when prompted. Wait a few seconds for iOS to restart on the iPhone and display the SpringBoard. Open a messaging app or other app that requires the use of the pop-up keyboard. When you open the on-screen keyboard, it displays using the new color scheme you selected in the Color Keyboard app.
Tips & Warnings
- Although there is only one legitimate app in the Cydia store that enables you to change the color of your iPhone on-screen keyboard, there are several similar apps available from the iTunes App Store. Depending upon your version of iOS, you may be able to use one or all of the following apps to change the keyboard color: Color Keyboard by Lifestyle, Inc., Color Keyboard Pro by Zhuang Li and Color Keyboard New by Swype. At the time of writing, all three apps are $1.99 at the iTunes website. Installing and using the apps is virtually identical to the process used with Color Keyboard app from the Cydia Store.
- Be wary of free apps in the Cydia store with "Color Keyboard" in the title, as they are probably mere copies of the original and may contain Trojan horse viruses or other malicious code that attempts to steal private or sensitive information. When searching for the Color Keyboard app in Cydia, ensure that you purchase and download the one by "Yoo Seung Kim," as it's the only one known to work with all versions of Cydia and to be free of malicious code. You may find other apps with similar titles, but they are copies of the original Color Keyboard app and may be harmful to your iPhone or computer, if you connect the phone to your PC.
- If you plan to use iTunes on your computer to install a color keyboard app from the iTunes App Store, don’t update your iOS software before doing so. If you update iOS in iTunes before downloading and installing the app on the iPhone, you will probably lose your jailbreak.
