A man’s hair is serious business. His hair is often the first thing that others notice and can greatly influence first impressions. Poorly kept hair, particularly along the neckline, can suggest sloppiness or worse, poor hygiene. Fortunately, trimming the nape of the neck is easily accomplished and doesn’t require an expensive trip to the salon.

Things You'll Need

  • Shampoo
  • 2 towels
  • Conditioner or shaving cream
  • Clippers or hand razor
  • Aftershave lotion or balm

Wash the hair and neck with shampoo and warm water to remove body oils, dirt and hair products such as gel or hairspray. Thoroughly dry the hair with a clean towel. Line the towel around the neck to catch falling hairs.

Place a small amount of hair conditioner in the palm of your hand, about the size of nickel, and massage it into the hair growing on the nape of the neck. The conditioner will act as a lubricant. Plug your electric trimmer into an outlet. If using a hand razor, coat the area to be shaved with shaving cream.

Shave the hair from the nape of the neck using slow upward motions with the electric trimmer against the direction of hair growth. If using a hand razor, shave the hair with slow downward motions with the direction of growth. Reapply shaving cream and shave again, this time against the grain to ensure a smooth shave.

Wash the neck of hair and conditioner or shaving cream with warm water. Apply aftershave balm or lotion to the neck.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always exercise caution when using a hand razor.
