How to Recover the Serial Number of a Lost iPad

Apple does not track or flag lost iPads, so the company recommends reporting your lost iPad to local police. To properly identify your iPad, law-enforcement agents require its serial number, which serves as a unique identifier. Locating the serial number without physical access to the device is tricky, but fortunately, Apple records this number in iTunes and your online Apple account.

  • Look through the original packaging for a printed label. This label typically contains the serial number of the device. If you did not keep the original paperwork or box, you can still find the serial number on your computer or online.

  • Open iTunes, click "Edit" and select "Preferences." Click the "Device" tab and move your mouse pointer over the last iPad backup. A popup appears containing the iPad's serial number.

  • Log in to Apple's My Support Profile page (see Resources) using the Apple ID under which you registered your iPad. Look under "My Products" for your iPad's serial number.
