How to Get a Microsoft Margin Bar Back

When working in Microsoft Word, changing the program's settings intentionally or accidentally can cause icons, menus and even rulers to disappear. The program's horizontal ruler contains margin markers that enable you to adjust the indent of paragraphs, words and phrases. If the ruler is not showing under Word's main toolbar, you can get the component back via Word's View tab. The ruler component is one of a variety of tools and options on Word's main toolbar.

  • Click the "View" tab on Word's main toolbar, also known as the ribbon.

  • Click the "Ruler" check box in the Show group. The margin ruler bar appears immediately under the main toolbar.

  • Click on one of the margin markers on the ruler and drag the marker to the desired location on the ruler to set an indent.
