How to Replace an MFC 5440 Print Head

A print head, which distributes ink from the cartridge onto a piece of paper, is the core of all Brother all-in-one inkjet printers, including the MFC 5440 model. Repeated use of a printer causes print heads to become clogged or worn, resulting in poor print quality. Because Brother all-in-one printers rely on the print head for the printer and copier to function properly, replace the print head cartridge immediately if cleaning the print head does not improve print quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide up the button on the front of the Brother printer to open the printer's front cover.

    • 2

Press the button on the paper outlet cover to open it.

    • 3

Grab the top handle of the print head cartridge and slowly remove it from the printer.

    • 4

Remove the new print head cartridge from its packaging and place it on a flat surface. Do not shake or tilt the print head cartridge.

    • 5

Pull out each of the print head cartridge's four seals.

    • 6

Grip both sides of the print head cartridge and gently remove the protective tape from the top of the print head cartridge.

    • 7

Grab the top handle of the new print head cartridge and lift it over the printer with the flat part of the print head cartridge facing the back of the printer.

    • 8

Align the orange rollers located toward the bottom of the print head cartridge on both sides with the slots in front of the arrows on the inside of the printer.

    • 9

Lower the print head cartridge into the printer where the one you removed was housed.

    • 10

Pull the print head cartridge's protective sheet up to remove it after the print head cartridge is in place. Avoid touching the black part of the print head cartridge to prevent damaging it.

    • 11

Close the paper outlet cover and then close the printer's front cover.
