How to Make a Face With a Wire Hanger thumbnail
Wire hangers can be used to create artistic faces.

If you are looking to create some abstract art, you can accomplish the task easily with a wire hanger. You will need to first straighten the hanger and then mold it to your design. Create a three-dimensional nose that pops out of the design and then cover the coat hanger with fabric to create a face. Creating a wire hanger face makes an enjoyable project for home, school or even a craft fair. The project will help kids develop a sense of creativity and concepts of shapes.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend the top part of the hanger. Do this by finding the base of the hook, measuring down the sloped part of the hanger two inches, and bending the hanger so that the hooked portion of the hanger touches the bottom portion of the hanger. The wire hanger hook will function as the nose of the face.

    • 2

Connect the open end of the hook so that it meets with the hanger's stem. The open end of the hook is the portion that you would normally use to attach the wire hanger to a closet rod.

    • 3

Smooth the outline of the triangular wire hanger to create an oval shape. The nose stays near the center of the hanger.

    • 4

Pull the nose of the coat hanger out so that it extends from the oval face outline to create a three-dimensional shape.

    • 5

Place fabric over the top of the face and glue the fabric to the hanger to create the basic shape of the face. Glue yarn to the top of the face to create hair.

    • 6

Paint or draw directly on the fabric to add facial features. Draw a nose, eyebrows and mouth to give an impression of a face.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of using paint, you can sew buttons for eyes, create a mouth out of a different color fabric and attach colored yarn for the eyebrows.
