How to Capture Caller ID Data With a Computer Modem
One problem with using dial-up Internet service is that you can not, simultaneously, talk on the telephone and maintain your Internet connection. A solution for this problem is to use your modem connection to capture caller ID data. By doing so, you can see who is calling, before you answer the phone. You have the choice of answering of the telephone call or ignoring it to maintain your Internet connection.

Download and install an Internet caller ID software program onto your computer. An example of software programs available include Phone Tray, Call Clerk and IdentaFone. Most of the software programs cost a fee.

Configure the caller ID program with your telephone number. The exact method enter your telephone number varies by program.

Open the Internet caller ID program on your computer. To do this, click the program icon from your computer desktop. Alternatively, click your Windows “Start” button and select “Programs” or “All Programs” to launch the program.

Connect the Internet via your dial-up Internet connection. When a call comes in, the software program displays the telephone number and name (if available) of the person calling.

Click “Answer” or “Accept” (wording varies) to answer the call. Click “Ignore” or “Reject” to reject the call and continue browsing the Web.
