How to Move a Virtual Center to a New Server
The VMware Virtual Center Server environment lets you manage several virtual machine from one central computer. The central server controls user permissions and acts as a gateway for each of your virtual machines. Before you move the Virtual Center Server, back up the SQL Server database that contains all of the pertinent information for managing the network servers.

Right-click the vCenter icon in the server's system tray. Click "Stop" to shut down the service. At this point, users are disconnected from any virtual machines and no new connections can be made.

Open the SQL Server Management Studio software on the server. Log in to your database and right-click its name in the navigation panel. Click "Tasks," then "Backup." A window opens where you configure the location of the backup. The default settings are suitable for a quick backup to move the server. Click "Browse" and select a location to back up the server. Back up the file in a location from which the new server can also access. Click "Backup" to perform the backup, which takes several minutes if it is a large database.

Insert the vCenter installation CD in the new server's disc drive. A splash screen opens. Click "Next" and type your vCenter serial number in the window. Select "Typical" for the installation type and click "Install" to install the software on the server.

Open the SQL Server Management Studio software on the new server. Right-click the database name and select "Tasks." Click "Restore" to open a configuration window in which you restore the backup you created on your previous server. Select the backup file and click "Restore" to import all your virtual sever settings.

Right-click the vCenter icon in the new server's system tray. Click "Restart" for the new changes to take effect.
