Care for an essential part of your nail by making homemade cuticle exfoliate. The cuticles block out bacteria from entering the nail bed, and keeping them healthy is the first step in any type of manicure and pedicure regime. Mix together a gentle exfoliate made from olive oil that softens the cuticles so they can be gently pushed back. Never cut the cuticle or use harsh abrasives because the cuticles can be damaged, causing nail infections.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup olive oil
  • Small saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • 1/3 cup natural clay
  • 3 drops tea tree oil
  • 3 drops lavender oil
  • Warm water bath
  • Soft towel
  • Moisturizer

Heat 1 cup of olive oil in a small saucepan at medium-low heat for three minutes. Olive oil softens and moisturizes the cuticle. Stir the oil with a wooden spoon to evenly distribute the heat.

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add 1/3 cup of natural clay and stir it well into the oil. The clay acts as a gentle exfoliate without scratching your nails.

Add three drops of tea tree oil and three drops of lavender oil to the mix. It should form a paste. The oils are antibacterial and lend a pleasant aroma. Allow the mixture to cool for 10 minutes so it is still warm to the touch but not hot.

Massage the paste into your cuticles. Let the clay mixture dry naturally on the nail area.

Dip your nails into a warm water bath to remove the clay exfoliate. Gently work the paste off your cuticles and push them back. Dry with a soft towel and moisturize.

Tips & Warnings

  • The recipe creates enough exfoliate to use on your hands and feet approximately four times. Save the extra clay mixture in an airtight container for up to four weeks.
  • Lemon juice can be added to the recipe as a natural whitener.
  • Soak your nails in warm water for five minutes before using the exfoliate to gain its full benefits.
