Decide on the design for the fabric appliques. Make a paper pattern, and then cut out a heart, star or Christmas tree shape out of Christmas fabric. Or, cut out an item or character that is already printed on the Christmas fabric, such as a snowman, reindeer, snowflake or wreath. As long as the cutout is 3 to 5 inches tall, and at least 1 inch wide, the applique will work.
Infuse your home with the spirit of Christmas by decorating every room, even the bathroom. Set out decorated face towels with a Christmas design appliqued to celebrate the season in this often overlooked room. Applique is a fine beginner project that is easy enough for children. Appliqued Christmas towels also make thoughtful gifts for relatives, teachers and neighbors.

Plug the iron in and set it to high. Turn the steam off, if you have that option.
Lay the applique onto a piece of fusible webbing and pin it in place. Cut the webbing so that it is the same size and shape as the applique. Unpin the two pieces. Trim any webbing that sticks out past the applique. It should match up with the fabric exactly at its edge.
Iron the fabric applique if there are any wrinkles. Lay the face towel on a flat surface. Position the applique on the towel as desired -- try centering or placing the applique off-center in the bottom third of the towel. Place it so you will see the applique when the towel is folded over a rack. Peel the backing off the fusible webbing, and then slip it underneath the applique.
Iron the applique to the face towel. Press the iron down firmly to ensure the webbing fuses to the fabric. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for ironing the fusible webbing, but generally it is 1 to 2 minutes. Set the iron aside and allow the fabric to cool.
Stitch around the edges of the applique using a sewing machine set to zigzag stitch. Choose a matching thread that complements the applique. Go around the very edges of the applique so that the unfinished fabric edges won't fray.
Embellish the applique as desired, by stitching lace, beads or other three-dimensional items onto the image. For example, stitch three small red seed beads onto a sprig of holly on a snowman's hat. Stitch lace to the edges of the towels, sew on a button, use gold thread to create a monogram or highlight parts of the applique with puff paint.
