How to Convert .Omf Files to Pro Tools Sessions
Avid’s Pro Tools is a comprehensive audio production platform designed for the professional market. Although known in professional circles for its ability to work with a wide variety of file formats, a basic Pro Tools installation cannot convert Adobe OMF files into a Pro Tools session without a separately available conversion utility called DigiTranslator. When installed, DigiTranslator integrates directly into Pro Tools. Its import and conversion options become available alongside Pro Tools’ standard import functions. Any OMF sequence can be imported and converted into a standard Pro Tools session using DigiTranslator.

1
Download and install DigiTranslator. As of 2011, using DigiTranslator is the only way to import all elements of an OMF project file into Pro Tools. If the application’s price point is a significant hurdle, use it in demo mode. In demo mode, all DigiTranslator functionality is available for use for 10 days. After that time, it must either be purchased or uninstalled.
-
2
Launch Pro Tools. A pop-up appears requesting iLok authorization for DigiTranslator. Follow the prompts to authorize the application. If you have not purchased a license, click the “Try” button to use DigiTranslator in demo mode. Pro Tools completes loading and displays its default interface.

3
Open the “File” menu and select “Session Data” from the “Import” sub-menu if you are importing an OMF sequence. Pro Tools’s “Open Session” dialog appears.
-
4
Navigate in the file browser pop-up to the OMF file you want to convert to a Pro Tools session and click on it. Click “Open.” The “New Session” dialog appears.
-
5
Select parameters for the new session. The audio file type, sample rate and bit depth settings are established by selecting the desired options from the appropriately labeled drop-down menus. It is not necessary that the settings reflect those used when creating the OMF file in Adobe Premiere or Audition. Click “OK” when you are finished selecting settings. A file save dialog appears.
-
6
Give the session a name and click “Save.” Pro Tools creates the session and displays the “Import Session Data” dialog. In the majority of cases, the default settings in this dialog will suffice. However, if the OMF file includes tempo, key signature or marker metadata that you want to preserve, place a checkmark next to the appropriate options at the bottom left of the dialog screen.
-
7
Click “OK.” Pro Tools imports and converts the OMF file into a standard Pro Tools session. You can now edit the project as normal.
