2001 Ford Escort Check Engine Light Problems
The 2001 Ford Escort's "Check Engine" light is triggered when the on-board computer detects an anomaly with the operation of the vehicle's systems. For the 2001 model year, the Ford Escort reports the diagnostic information through the OBD II port, located under the driver's side dashboard. The OBD II port allows a diagnostic tool to be connected to the vehicle's on-board computer system to retrieve diagnostic information in the form of codes. The codes are interpreted through the tool, a user's manual or through the OBD website to determine why the "Check Engine" light is being displayed.
Instructions
-
-
1
Turn the Ford Escort engine off and remove the ignition key.
-
2
Connect the OBD II tool's port-cable connector to the OBD II port, located on the driver's side, just under the plastic dashboard to the left of the steering column.

3
Turn on the OBD II reader and allow it to initialize.
-
4
Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position, but do not turn on the vehicle.

Monitor the code reader, and follow the on-screen instructions to retrieve the diagnostic codes. The exact steps required are determined by the manufacturer and model of the reader.
-

Tips & Warnings
If you choose to clear the codes, the "Check Engine" light will turn off. However, if the condition causing the warning light to display is not repaired, the "Check Engine" light will be triggered again when the on-board computer again detects the anomaly.
