How to Fix the Upright Lock Pedal on a Bissell ProHeat
The Bissell ProHeat carpet cleaner is designed to look similar to an upright vacuum cleaner. It has a brush foot that applies shampoo and a long vertical handle that contains the various tanks. The upright lock pedal sits behind the foot and, when depressed, unlocks the handle from its vertical position. Fixing the pedal makes it easier to use the carpet cleaner if it is stuck in its upright position. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Inspect the pedal; when pressed with your foot, it should move downward and spring back up. Check to make sure the pedal is correctly seated; it could have been knocked out of position. If there is damage to the pedal, it will need to be replaced. Putting too much pressure on the plastic sometimes causes pieces to break off. If possible, snap the pedal back into position.

2
Ensure there is nothing tangled around the pedal. Carpet threads or other material could be restricting the up and down movement or preventing the pedal unlocking the handle. Use a pair of tweezers to pick out anything caught in the pedal's mechanism.

Unplug the ProHeat and move the handle backward if the pedal allows and turn the SmartMix dial to the position marked "Normal." Pull out the solution and clean water tanks, clear flow indicator cap, red spinner and filter from the base of the appliance and undo the screws on the clear window and the plastic cover near the wheels. Lift the covers off the ProHeat to reveal the inner parts of the pedal. Make sure it is seated properly in its transparent plastic housing and check for missing pieces. There should be a plastic tab pointing up at a 45-degree angle from the back of the pedal and another below the pedal, also pointing upward. If these parts pieces have snapped off the pedal might not reposition itself. Inspect the mechanism to the side of the pedal used to release the handle for damage. Push down on the pedal to see if it is capable of moving.
