How to: 1999 Ford Mustang Check Engine Light Stays On
The Ford Mustang was introduced in late 1964 as a 1964-1/2 model. The 1999 Ford Mustang was available in three trims; base, GT and Cobra. The "Check Engine" light on the 1999 Mustang is illuminated when the onboard diagnostic computer or OBD-II computer senses an error in the vehicle. Several sensors throughout the vehicle transmit data to the OBD-II computer. Checking the OBD-II or "Check Engine" light is somewhat simple, but the repairs to fix the problem may not be as simple.

1
Open the driver's door of the Mustang. Locate the OBD-II plug port beneath the driver's side dashboard. The plug port looks identical in shape to the plug adapter on your OBD-II scanner. Insert the scanner into the plug port, then sit in the driver's seat of the Mustang. Turn the ignition key to the "II" accessories position without starting the car. Press the power button on the scanner to boot it, if needed.

2
Select "Domestic" and "OBD-II" codes from the main menus on the scanner. Select your vehicle using the "Up" and "Down" arrow keys, followed by the "Read" or "OK" button to accept your answers. Select "Read Trouble Codes" from the menu, if needed. Allow the OBD-II scanner to communicate with your vehicle.

3
Perform the repairs on your Mustang to eliminate the source of the "Check Engine" light, based on the information provided by your scanner. Some scanners offer a large definition and possible solutions to eliminate the trouble code, depending on the quality of the scanner. Research the P-number online for possible repairs that you can make yourself. Take the vehicle to a local shop if you doubt your ability to perform any of the repairs needed.
-
4
Scan the OBD-II computer once all of the repairs have been made. Press the "Erase" button to remove the trouble codes from your car's onboard computer. Start and drive the Mustang as you normally would. If the "Check Engine" light comes on immediately or within a few miles of driving, the original source of the trouble code may have not been properly repaired. Continue repairs and scanning until the "Check Engine" light no longer illuminates.

Never erase an OBD-II diagnostic trouble code without making the proper repairs to the Mustang. Complete loss of the engine or vehicle could result.
