How to Light a GE Push Button Ignition Gas Hot Water Heater

General Electric manufactures a line of gas-powered hot water heaters with a push-button ignition system built on the side of the tank. The button triggers the ignitor to produce a spark for lighting the pilot on the heater. This safety feature offers reliable, one-hand ignition without the risk of using matches or another open flame, such as from a cigarette lighter. Using the push-button ignition system to ignite the burner inside the GE hot water heater takes less than a minute. No tools are needed.

  • Open the gas valve connected to the GE hot water heater. The valve has a lever that must be turned parallel to the gas line to open the valve.

  • Turn the knob on the control console on the side of the GE water heater to the "Pilot" position. This releases a small amount of gas to the pilot light assembly.

  • Press the red ignition button until it clicks. This sends a spark to the electrode in front of the pilot, causing the pilot to light.

  • Turn the knob on the control console to the "On" position and adjust the thermostat to the desired temperature. A cold tank should reach the set temperature in less than two hours, depending on the capacity.
