Installing a Sirius satellite radio in a BMW E39 5 series car involves three phases: installing the Sirius adapter module in the navigation unit, then installing the Sirius antenna either on the outside or inside the car cabin, and finally removing and reconnecting the negative battery terminal.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear all items from the trunk of the vehicle and remove the carpet that covers the floor of the trunk. The bare floor reveals fasteners; remove them as well.

    • 2

Open the driver's side panel door from the floor of the trunk using a screwdriver. This reveals the navigation unit to which you are going to connect the Sirius adapter module.

    • 3

Unbolt the CD changer from its housing in the navigation unit, then unplug the 3-pin and 6-pin connectors from the bottom of the changer.

    • 4

Plug the 3-pin and 6-pin connectors into the Sirius adapter module.

    • 5

Slide the Sirius adapter behind the CD changer and between the factory amplifier. Hold the adapter in place using Velcro tape.

    • 6

Mount the radio antenna either on the trunk's lid outside of the vehicle or on the rear deck inside the car cabin. Either way, route the cable, along the edges, back to the Sirius adapter. Velcro tape can help tuck the antenna cable and keep it in place. Plug the antenna cable into the port on the adapter.

    • 7

Secure all the wiring and close the panel door.

    • 8

Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10 mm wrench. Let the battery sit for at least one hour.

    • 9

Reconnect the battery. Turn the car on and let it run for at least a minute. At this point, the radio tuner recognizes the newly installed device, and Sirius should now be ready to use.
