If you try to install the H&R Block tax software on a Linux computer, you'll face an incredible challenge. The tax preparation company doesn't provide software compatible with Linux operating systems; it's available only on Windows and Mac computers. As an alternative, the company recommends using its H&R Block At Home online application to prepare your taxes. There's a free version to get you started and test out. If you need something more complex, you can upgrade to the Basic, Deluxe or Premium package.

Double-click the icon for your preferred browser on your Linux system.

Navigate to hrblock.com, and then hover your mouse cursor over the "File at Home" tab and click the "Free" option from the large drop-down window. On the next page, click the "Sign Up" button.

Enter your username, password and email address in the appropriate fields on the next screen. Click the check box that you agree to the terms of service and click the "Sign Up" button.
