How to Upload GPS to a Server

GPS data transmitted by a GPS receiver or GPS-enabled smartphone can be viewed in real time on a map for the purpose of monitoring employees or children. If you need to store the data for later use, such as proof of miles traveled for work reimbursement, you can save the data to a server via an application with a server-upload feature.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a GPS-tracking program that allows users to upload GPS data information to a server, such as MyTracking (mytrackingonline.com) or GpsGate (gpsgate.com). Install the program's accompanying mobile phone app if you're using a smartphone as your GPS device.

    • 2

Turn on your smartphone and launch the GPS app you added to it, or turn on your AVL GPS receiver, such as the type that is connected to a company vehicle. If you're using a GPS receiver instead of a smartphone, connect the receiver to your computer via its data cable so that the program can find the device and connect itself accordingly.

    • 3

Open your email client if you're using MyTracking software and send a request for free server access to "info@mytrackingonline.com." The company will provide you with personal information that is unique to you for accessing its server and implementing it with your MyTracking software installation. The program will display the GPS onscreen and provide details, such as car speed and miles traveled. You can retrieve this information from the sever anytime via the account MyTracking provides you.

Click "Settings," then "Output" if you're using GpsGate. Choose "gpsgate.com" from the "Output" drop-down menu. This will prompt GpsGate to store the GPS tracking data on the company's servers instead of a server from a different company. Alternatively, select "More Options," then "Select Server" and enter the IP number and port for your personal server. The GPS data gathered by GpsGate will be saved to the server you specified, where you can retrieve it whenever needed, such as at tax time.

Tips & Warnings
