How to Program Prom Chips With a Battery
A PROM, or programmable read-only memory, chip is notable because it can be programmed only one time. Once you program it, the common wisdom goes, it is set that way for good. This is not entirely accurate, however. The chip does not get set; the chip battery does. Removing the internal battery essentially wipes the PROM clean, and replacing it with a new battery allows you to program it again from scratch.
Instructions

1
Remove the PROM chip from the device to which is connected.
-
2
Locate the battery. This is a small black rectangle with tiny silver pins on either side. It will look like the replacement battery you have purchased.
-
-
3
Gently pop out the battery with a small screwdriver. An eyeglass screwdriver is ideal, but a small nail file would also work. It will come out, but you may need to wiggle it a little. Do not use much force, though, as ripping it out might damage the PROM connectors.
-
4
Push a new battery in its place.
-
5
Program the PROM however you like. With the new battery, it has been wiped clean, so you do not need any other steps beyond regular PROM programming.
-
6
Insert the PROM back in the device when you are finished.
