Things You'll Need
- Garden gloves
- 3-by-2-inch green foam floral block
- Garden shears
- Evergreen branches
- 24-gauge green floral wire
- 3-inch wide holiday ribbon
Instructions

1
Don your garden gloves to protect your hands from sharp or sticky branches.
-
2
Cut five evergreen branches from the yard. Fir, cedar and noble pine work well for this swag. If you don’t have an evergreen available, you can obtain these branches at florists or nurseries. Cut four branches 25 inches long and one branch 18 inches long.

3
Set the green foam floral block on your work surface. Cut two pieces of green floral wire about 6 inches long and one piece 10 inches long. Use 24-gauge floral wire as it can hold up to 20 pounds.
-
4
Place two of the 25-inch-long branches on table so the centers of the branches crisscross over the block. Make sure the dark side of the branches faces down. Lift the branches up at the center and wrap one of the six-inch pieces floral wire around them.
-
5
Crisscross the remaining two 25-inch branches as you did in step four. Hold them together in the center and secure them together with a six-inch piece of floral wire.
-
6
Cut two 18-inch pieces of floral wire. Insert one end of the wires through the floral block. Insert one piece of wire 1/2-inch from the top edge of the block and the other 1/2-inch from the bottom edge. Pull the wires so that 4 inches sticks out from one side. Curve each of the 4-inch pieces of wire to form two loops. Close the loop by wrapping one end of the wire around the base of each loop two to three times. These loops will serve as the hangers when you secure the swag to your trellis.
-
7
Place the last branch horizontally across the four tied branches. Wrap the 10-inch piece of floral wire around the branches. Twist the wire around the bottom of the branches to hide it from view.
-
8
Set the wired evergreen branches on top of the floral block. Wrap each piece of wire from the block around the branches tightly, two to three times around, to secure them to the block.
-
9
Slide the end of the 3-inch wide holiday ribbon underneath the center of the branches. Twist the ribbon to work it around the wires in the floral block that are attached to the branches. Pull the end around to the front so you can hold both ends together evenly. Tie the ribbon into a large bow in the front of the branches.
-
10
Hang the swag wreath horizontally across the top of the trellis or vertically from the center of the top bar.
