How to Get Free Skype Call Credits

Buying a headset for Skype may get you some free credit.

For most of its basic purposes -- such as calling other Skype users and exchanging instant messages -- Skype is free. However, when you begin venturing into the realm of calling non-Skype phones or sending text messages, you must pay either with credits or by having a paid subscription. Before paying for credits, check to see if there is an alternative. While you still must pay something, you can sometimes earn Skype credits by buying something you would have bought anyway so that the credits themselves are free.

  Navigate to Skype's home page (skype.com)

  Click the purplish "Special Offers" button near the top right side of the page. This takes you to a page listing Skype's current offers, some of which typically include free credit. As of the date of publication, for example, you get $5 in international calling credit for buying a phone adapter and up to 200 minutes for buying a cordless phone that includes Skype.

  Click the green "Learn more" button for any offer that interests you. This takes you to a page where you can read more about the item in question as well as the free credit.

  Click the "Buy now" button to purchase the item. In the checkout process, you learn how to obtain your Skype credit. In some cases, for example, you receive a voucher by email.
