Find out how you can use a wireless router with your AT&T U-Verse gateway.

At&T's U-Verse RG (Residential Gateway), also referred to as wireless gateways, function as both modems and wireless routers. But if your U-Verse RG uses an outdated wireless broadcast standard and you have a router that uses a more modern standard, you can bridge the two devices. By setting up your router as a bridge for your U-Verse connection, you can use the RG as a modem and the router to provide WiFi.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your computer to your U-verse gateway via Ethernet cable, if you're currently connect via WiFi. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into your computer's network card. Plug the opposite end of the cable into the "LAN" port on your gateway.

    • 2

Launch web browser on your computer. Type "192.168.1.254" into the browser's address bar, and then hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Click on the "Home Network" tab once your gateway's interface has loaded into the browser. Write down the Mac address on the page.

    • 3

Click inside of the "Enable" to activate bridging for your gateway. Type your subnet mask, usually "255.255.255.0" into the "Subnet Mask" field -- contact AT&T Internet Support department if you don't know your subnet mask. Click "Save."

    • 4

Unplug the Ethernet cable from the "LAN" port on your gateway, and then plug it into the "LAN" port on your router. Type "192.168.1.254" into your browser's address bar to access your router's interface -- the interface's address could vary, check the bottom of your router for the address.

    • 5

Click on the "Wireless Bridging" option in the router's interface. Check the "Enable Wireless Bridging" option. Check the "Enable Only Specific Access Point to Connect" option, and then type your gateway's mac address into the associated field. Clear the "Enable DHCP" check box.

    • 6

Disconnect the Ethernet cable from your computer's network card, and then plug it into the "LAN" port on your gateway. Disconnect the power cable from your router for ten seconds, and then replace it to complete setup.
