A focus group is a small assembly of individuals who gather together to discuss issues of common interest. These types of groups can vary from business project teams to special interest clubs. However, as with any group, dynamics play a major role in how effective the group is at maintaining cohesion and achieving its goals. If you plan to start, participate or lead a focus group, it is crucial that you understand how to maintain good dynamics.

      Assemble your group. Limit the group's size to a maximum of 10 to 15 individuals. Any more people than this is too difficult to organize and control, which hampers group dynamics.

      Choose serious members. Do not arbitrarily add friends or colleagues unless you know they are committed to the group. If your focus group is a book club, for example, ensure that everyone is interested in the material, and enthusiastic about meeting. If you are leading a team for a business project, select only those candidates who have proven expertise and dedication in their field.

      Determine your group's objectives. Focus is key in accomplishing objectives. The mission, values and goals must be unanimous. If each individual has a separate idea of the group's direction, approach or methods, the group dynamic is dispersed. The same applies for a business project. Without a common goal and an understanding of how to reach that goal, the undertaking is at risk of failure.

      Select a proper leader. Focus groups are neither democratic nor autocratic. A proper leader guides the group, keeps it on track and allows each individual to contribute freely. Any impasses or decisions need to be unanimously agreed upon. Never rely on a majority vote. If some members are forced to agree with the rest of the group, dissent may ensue and your dynamic suffers.

      Be consistent. Set a specific meeting time and ensure that all members meet regularly. If your focus group experiences frequent absenteeism, others may lose interest as well. Remain organized by following the same format for each meeting. However, keep this format simple, to allow your group to stay on track.
