How to Output a Speaker to a Microphone's Input

One way of recording audio from your computer speakers is to connect a microphone to your PC and place it in front of one of the speakers while you record. However, this usually results in low recording volume at best and almost always produces a lot of feedback. If you use Windows on your computer, though, there is a much better way of recording audio from your computer speakers without using a microphone at all. With tools already built into Windows, you can enable recording of any sounds you can hear over your PC speakers.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows “Start” button, then “Control Panel.” Click the “Hardware and Sound” icon in the "Control Panel" window.

    • 2

Click the “Sound” link icon in the “Hardware and Sound” window. After the “Sound” options box appears, click the “Recording” tab.

    • 3

Right-click anywhere inside the "Recording" tab device list, and then click “Show Disabled Devices” on the pop-out menu.

    • 4

Scroll down through the list of recording devices and highlight the “Stereo Mix” option. Click “Apply,” then “OK.”

    • 5

Click the “Start” button, then “All Programs.” Click “Accessories” on the program folder list, then “Sound Recorder.”

    • 6

Launch the audio file you want to record in your preferred media player program. Alternatively, load a Web page or movie page containing audio you want to record.

    • 7

Click the red “Start Recording” button on Sound Recorder to start recording the sound playing through your speakers.

    • 8

Click the blue “Stop Recording” button to stop recording. Click “Yes” when prompted to save changes to the audio file.

    • 9

Type a file name for the new audio file in the “File name” field box. Select a folder on your PC in which to save the recording, and then click “Save.” Windows saves the recording of the audio in the folder you selected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sound Recorder saves the recording in the WMA format, which you can open and play in Windows Media Player or most other common media player applications.
