How to Measure for Quilts
Quilts are often made in standard sizes to fit twin, full, queen and king-sized beds. However, if you have a non-traditional mattress size, you may want to measure your bed to create a custom-fitted quilt. To create a quilted throw for your couch or favorite arm chair, you will need to measure the length and width to determine the dimensions necessary to provide the coverage you desire.
Instructions
-
Bed Quilt
-
1
Measure and record the length and width of the mattress top using a tailor’s tape measure.
-
2
Measure one side of the bed from the very edge of the mattress top to the intended hanging length of the finished quilt. Apply this same hanging length to the other side and the foot of the bed.
-
-
3
Add the measurement from Step 2 to the quilt top measurement. Double the hanging length measurement and add it to the quilt top’s width and add the hanging measurement to the length of the quilt top measurement. This determines the length and width you will need to make the finished quilt.
Quilt Throw
-
4
Measure the waistline of the intended user of the quilted throw using a vinyl, tailor’s tape measure. Add 12 inches to this measurement to ensure the throw adequately covers the user when worn.
-
5
Measure from the users feet to where the user wants the top of the quilt throw to lay against their body when used.
-
6
Add an extra 12 inches to this measurement to ensure the user's feet are covered when laying under the throw.

Tips & Warnings
When cutting the quilt blocks for piecing, you will need to cut the quilt blocks one-half inch longer and wider than they will appear in the finished quilt to allow for seams.
To simplify the process of measuring for the quilted throw, you may also use the intended user’s height as the quilt throw’s length; this produces a slightly longer throw.
