How to Add Sliders to a Gradient Bar in Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator default gradients feature a fixed number of sliders within a gradient bar but you can add more sliders to this bar. As you modify a gradient by adding sliders, keep in mind that each additional slider functions as a marker for color transitions that alter the look of a preset gradient. Since sliders represent where colors blend when the gradient is applied, choose hues that make appealing color transitions for best results.

  • Open an Illustrator file. Select "Window" followed by "Swatches" to view the Swatches panel.

  • Click a suitable gradient from within the Swatches panel.

  • Select "Window" and "Gradient" to display Adobe Illustrator's Gradient panel.

  • Click a swatch color from within the Swatches panel and drag it onto the gradient bar within the Gradient panel. A new slider containing the color of the swatch you dragged appears.

  • Click anywhere on the bottom boundary of a gradient's slider bar to add a new slider.
