How to Keep Tulle From Wrinkling

How to Keep Tulle From Wrinkling thumbnail
Use tulle as a decorative drape.

Tulle is a lightweight netting with a very small mesh. Less expensive tulle is usually made from synthetic fibers such as nylon or rayon, and more expensive tulle is made with silk. Tulle is used for wedding veils, scarves, tutus, petticoats, gift wrapping and bows, gift bags as well as decorating. Since it should not be ironed as it might melt or burn, keeping tulle wrinkle-free is a challenge. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Hang tulle tutus, skirts and petticoats from hangers rather than storing them folded flat. Shake any folds or creases out with your hands before hanging the tulle garment, and smooth the tulle with your hands after putting it on the hanger.

    • 2

Pack tulle garments with plenty of tissue paper to keep them from wrinkling, on the occasions when you have to put the tulle garment in a box or suitcase. Line all the folds in the garment with tissue paper.

    • 3

Wrap tulle yardage around a tube to store it. As you roll it around the tube, smooth out any wrinkles and keep the tulle flat. Secure the tulle with pins so it doesn't unroll by itself, and wrap tissue paper or wrapping paper around the outside of the roll to keep the tulle clean.

    • 4

Mist your tulle skirt, petticoat or tutu with a fine spray of water or use a wrinkle releaser to lightly spray the skirt if it gets wrinkled while you are wearing it. Shake out the wrinkles and let the skirt dry. Don't use enough spray to make the fabric wet, just barely damp. In an emergency you can also use a very light mist of hair spray to smooth out wrinkles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a hand-held steamer for clothing to mist your wrinkled tulle and hang it to dry. Wash tulle by hand and let it dry flat or hang it to dry.

  • Never put tulle in the dryer where it can melt; wrinkles can set permanently or it can be torn.
