Tricorn hats are synonymous with pirates. If you are crafting a pirate puppet, or would like to make some new costumes for your existing puppets, you can make a pirate costume from household items. The tricorn hat can be crafted from felt. Embellish it with a skull and crossbones or with feathers for a more flamboyant look. Add an eye patch and a cardboard sword for a complete pirate look.
- Tape measure
- Sheet of felt fabric
- Styrofoam ball
- Elastic band
- White glue
- Paint brush
- Needle and thread
Use the tape measure to measure your puppet's head and the width of the brim so you can ascertain the size of your hat. Cut out a circle from the felt fabric that is the size that you want your pirate hat to be.
Place a Styrofoam ball that's the same size as your puppet's head on your work surface. Wet the felt piece and shape it over half of the Styrofoam ball. Secure the crown of the hat with an elastic band.
Paint the hat crown with white glue. This will help it to keep its shape. Leave to dry. Remove the hat from the Styrofoam ball.
Place the brim against the crown and sew it in place with the needle and thread. Now sew the brim to the hat in a triangle shape. This means that the brim is attached to the hat in three places, all equally spaced around the circumference.
Choose one side of the hat to be the front. Glue the feather to the left side of the hat at a jaunty angle.
