How to Measure an Elongated Toilet Seat

Save

Replacing a toilet seat sometimes requires you to take some measurements before purchasing a new one if you have an elongated seat. Toilet bowls come in round and elongated versions. The elongated bowls resemble one end of an egg. The seats range in length from 15 1/2 inches to 17 1/2 inches. One way to get an accurate measurement is to use a level. The level provides a straight edge across from the mounting bolts, eliminating the need to guess when measuring from the front center of the seat.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Raise the toilet seat lid. When measuring a toilet seat, measure the seat portion and not the lid.

  • Pull the end of the tape measure out until you have 25 inches extended. Push the tape measure blade lock down to hold the length of the extended tape blade.

  • Place a 4-foot level on its side on top of the toilet seat with the outside edge of the level on the front edge of the seat.

  • Measure from the center of the right toilet seat bolt to the outside edge of the level. This is the overall length of the elongated toilet seat.

  • Take the measurement between the center of both toilet seat bolts. This is the measurement of the holes required on the new toilet seat.
