Lace front wigs can be applied at home.

Lace front wigs differ from traditional wigs due to the lace meshing lining the wig. It is the lace portion that makes attaching and removing the wig easy enough to do at home, once you get the technique down pat. Covering up a bald spot with a lace front wig is one way to have a full head of hair. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Pull back your hair. Make sure to use hair conditioner or gel to create a slick and sleek base for the wig to rest on. Pay attention to the area where you have a bald spot to make sure the area is not covered up by the hair you pulled back.

    • 2

Clean you forehead and bald spot using rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball. Remove all traces of dirt and oil from your skin and scalp.

    • 3

Lay the wig on your head, making sure to extend 1/4 inch past the natural hairline along your forehead. If bald spots are in the front of your scalp, determine a natural hairline using the top ridge of your forehead as a guide. Mark on the wig, using an eyeliner pencil, the line where the lace portion of the wig should fall to extend past your hairline and on to your forehead. Trim the excess lace using sharp scissors and following the guideline.

Secure the forehead section of the wig first using bobby pins in a color matching your natural hair color or the color of the wig. Continue securing the lace front wig to your natural hair, making sure bobby pins are in place between both temples.

    • 5

Pin the lace front wig behind both ears using bobby pins. Adjust the wig as necessary, making sure your bald spot is completely covered. Use extra bobby pins in the areas closest to the bald spot. If your bald spot is large, use wig adhesive or wig tape to secure the lace wig directly to your scalp using a cosmetic stick or your fingertip. Do not use Q-tips.

    • 6

Pin the back of the wig on the nape of your neck to ensure a secure fit for the entire circumference of the wig. Bring your chin to your chest before securing the wig. Make sure to push bobby pins far enough in to your natural hair so the weight of the wig does not pull the wig off of your head.

Wear a stretchy headband to help further keep your wig in place. Play around with hair styles based on the headband, such as a teased, high bump in the back for an evening look or a smoothed down style for a casual appearance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose a wig in a shade matching your natural hair color.

  • Trim only small sections of the lace wig at a time until you are sure of a proper fit.
