How to Knit a Finger Knit Scarf
Finger knitting is a simple craft requiring few tools that anyone can do. It can be used to introduce a child to knitting because it gives them a basic introduction to how stitches are made, yet doesn't require them to handle knitting needles in order to produce a scarf. The only tools you need to finger knit a scarf are yarn, a pair of scissors and your own two hands, so there is no reason why you can't get started today in making yourself a personalized scarf.
Things You'll Need
- Yarn -- bulky weight or two strands of worsted that will be held together
- Scissors

1
Hold your non-dominant hand palm up, facing you. Drape the end of your yarn -- the tail -- between your finger and thumb from behind your hand, so the cut ends trail over your palm -- about six inches worth.
-
2
Grasp the yarn that is attached to your yarn skein -- the working yarn -- and begin winding it around your fingers. As the tail of your yarn is hanging across your palm, wind the working yarn around the back of your index finger, the front of your middle finger, the back of your ring finger and the front of your pinkie. Continue around, winding it across the opposite sides of each finger, so around the back of your pinkie, the front of the ring finger, and so on until you are back at your index finger.

Wrap around your fingers a second time, so there are two complete loops around each finger. Keep your wraps loose enough that you can move them along your fingers.
-
4
Pull the bottom loop of yarn on your pinkie up and over the top of your finger -- and the top loop -- and drop it to the back of your hand. Continue across the row, lifting the bottom stitch up and over the top of the finger to the back of your hand, until you have lifted all four stitches.
-
5
Wrap your yarn again as before, winding it around your fingers. Knit across your fingers again from pinkie to index, lifting the bottom loops up and over each finger tip to the back. Continue in this pattern, occasionally tugging on the knitting behind your hand to tighten the stitches up, until you are satisfied with the length of your scarf.

6
Bind off your stitches. When you reach the last row, do not wrap your fingers. Move the loop on your pinkie over to your ring finger and knit it off -- lift the bottom loop over the top of your finger and to the back. Repeat across until you have one loop left. Cut your working yarn, leaving a six inch tail. Pass the tail through the loop and pull on it to knot your yarn.

Tips & Warnings
Add a small fringe to your scarf by cutting several short lengths of yarn -- about one foot -- and looping them in half. Get a crochet hook, pass the hook through the scarf right above the knot. Pull the loop of your fringe yarn through the scarf with your crochet hook, pass the ends through the loop and pull on it to tighten. Trim the ends up with a pair of scissors.
Make several finger knit tubes and braid them to make a wider scarf. Tie them together at the ends using their yarn tails.
