How to Make Your Own Backyard Circus

While it may not be possible to hire professional acrobats, rent circus animals or tame lions in your home, you can create a circus in your own backyard with a few creative crafts and a little imagination. Your home circus may simulate many of the attractions of the real thing.

Things You'll Need

  • Tables
  • Table cloth
  • Duct tape
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Face paint
  • Paper bags
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Jump rope

Instructions

    • 1

Place tables in the backyard and cover them with table cloths. Use the tables as game booths by attaching homemade signs indicating the name of the game. Use the same tables to set up face painting booths.

    • 2

Design a booth where children can create their own circus animal masks using paper bags. Use paint and markers to create lions, tigers, elephants and giraffe faces on the paper bags. Cut holes in the bags for the eyes and mouth using scissors.

    • 3

Lay a jump rope on the ground to create a makeshift tight-rope walk. Provide prizes to children who stay on the line.

    • 4

Re-create the popular water-gun circus game by setting up plastic bottles 8-to-10 feet away from the line where children will stand. Give squirt bottles to the children and instruct them to aim at the bottles and fire. The child who knocks the empty water bottle over first wins the game.

    • 5

Teach children to juggle using tennis balls and beans by cutting a slit in the side of a tennis ball. Squeeze the ball until an opening forms. Fill the tennis ball halfway with beans and release, allowing the seal to close. Repeat for as many balls as you will need. Use the balls to teach children how to juggle.

    • 6

Use old clothing in bright colors to dress children in clown costumes. Provide red-ball noses and wigs, if available.

Tips & Warnings

  • Play circus music to set the mood.
  • Invite children to invent their own circus games.
