How to Run a Prize Campaign on Facebook

Prizes get people excited, and offering prizes through your Facebook fan page can get people excited about your organization. You must comply with the Facebook rules for promotions. One of the key provisions in the Facebook rules is that you cannot use Facebook tools to administer the promotion. You must use a third-party application for all of the prize campaign administration. Some companies will build and host the apps for you, such as Wildfire Apps, Fan Appz or Virtue.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure a prize for your campaign. Prizes that are difficult to obtain work well for prize campaigns. Offer several prizes if possible, so that you can have multiple winners.

    • 2

Create an app for your Facebook page. If you don't know how to code and host the app on your own, you can use an app developer, such as Wildfire Apps, Fan Appz or Virtue Publishing to create and host the app. Connect the app to your Facebook fan page. If you're using one of the hosted services, the service will do this automatically for you.

    • 3

Promote your prize campaign through sharing on Facebook. Send a message to the fans of your page. Let them be the first to enter the campaign as a reward for being fans. Send message to your friends and contacts on Facebook encouraging them to sign up for the campaign. Give at least one month for the entry period, so there is enough time to create a viral buzz.

    • 4

Make a big deal out of prize results. Show pictures of the winners on your Facebook page. Tease the next campaign you have coming up and state that the fans of your page get the first chance to win. This allows the campaign to continue driving traffic to your site, even after it's over.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use correct terminology for your campaign. A contest has a winner based on skill. A sweepstakes has a winner based on chance.

  • Comply with all federal and local laws pertaining to prize campaigns.
