How to Make Capes for Kids

When the Halloween season arises, you can often find yourself looking through stores to find the right costume for your child to wear. These costumes are often costly, considering they will most likely only be worn once. To save money, create your own cape for your child to wear. This is an ideal costume addition for a child looking to dress up as a vampire or superhero.

Things You'll Need

  • Rectangular black fabric
  • Paper plate
  • Scissors
  • Safety pin
  • Place the rectangular piece of fabric out in front of you. The fabric should be big enough that it will cover the back of your child.

  • Fold the rectangular fabric in half vertically. Place the center of the paper plate on to the top right corner of the fabric so that one quarter of the plate is on the fabric. Use a pair of scissors to cut around the edge of the paper plate that is over the fabric. This will create an area to attach the cape to the child with two flaps at either side.

  • Use the scissors to cut six or seven waves into the bottom of the fabric. This will make it look much more like a cape.

  • Place the cape on to the child. Grab hold the two flaps at the top of the cape and place them over each other. Attach a safety pin through them both to secure them in place.
