How to Optimize Your Twitter Bio Separators

A Twitter bio separator is a character that divides keywords, phrases or descriptive sentences on your profile's bio section. These can be anything from a simple comma or symbol. Using bio separators is a useful way to communicate key concepts on your profile. This gives a person viewing your profile a quick snapshot of who you are. Since the bio section on a Twitter profile is limited to 160 characters, you should take advantage of using keywords with a bio separators.

  • Go to and sign into your Twitter account.

  • Click the "Profile" tab at the top to view your profile as it is right now. On the profile page, click the "Edit Your Profile" link.

  • Go to the "Bio" section and type keywords or phrases that best describe who you are or why you are using Twitter.

  • Use a separator between the keywords or phrases that does not distract the reader. Common and useful separators include a comma, a period and the "|" character (located above the Enter key on most keyboards).

  • Use the same separator between all phrases and keywords. Using a different separator can distract the reader and cause him to leave your profile quickly before getting a sense of who you are.

  • Click the "Save" button to update your Twitter profile. The changes you made take effect immediately.
