1
Dedicate an airbrushing tool exclusively for food. Do not use an airbrush that you use for other tasks such as painting crafts or applying make-up. You do not want to contaminate your food with non-edible paint.
-
2
Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to use, maintain and clean your airbrushing device.
-
-
3
Place a plastic drop cloth over the surface you will be painting on top of to avoid making a mess. You can purchase a plastic drop cloth from any home improvement store.
-
4
Practice on poster board or paper towels before you start on your cake. Perfect your technique noting the speed, angle and pressure of the food dye as it exits the gun.
-
5
Think about the overall design of your cake before you start airbrushing. Form a game plan of which colors go where and in which order you will apply them. You may also choose to use a stencil.
-
6
Stay 6 to 8 inches away from the cake to prevent the pressurized air from the hose from disrupting the surface of the icing on the cake. Stay within 8 inches to prevent the paint from getting onto unwanted surfaces.
-
7
Clean the gun with hot water in between colors to prevent them from mixing.
